This exceptionally rare oil‑and‑candle trench lamp, marked Weltlaterne and produced by J. Schwarz & Co. of Berlin, dates from around 1910–1920. It is complete, mechanically functional, and features several beautiful and ingenious design elements.
The chimney can be smoothly extended and retracted. One of the small side doors can be secured with a sliding latch, and the glass can also be locked into place. The lantern originally had a handle on the top; two side handles are still present. The back is marked with both the manufacturer’s name and Weltlaterne.
A hallmark feature of trench lanterns: the oil reservoir can be removed, revealing a clamp beneath it intended for holding a candle. The small cap stored in the left clasp is used to seal the oil tank when switching to candle mode.
Note: the spring mechanism for the candle is no longer functioning properly.
A particularly special detail is the external wick adjuster: a small spring‑loaded holder that allows you to raise or lower the wick from the outside by clipping the mechanism onto the burner — a wonderful and uncommon surviving feature.
This lamp makes a stunning addition to any serious collection of trench lamps, early 20th‑century lighting, or industrial antiques. It also serves as a fantastic decorative piece for an industrial interior.
